Summary

  • EU prototype shops deliver 1-board MOQ in 3-7 working days vs 14-30 days from JLCPCB air freight.
  • Eurocircuits and AISLER lead on quick-quote UX; mid-EU EMS lead on Class 3 and scale-up continuity.
  • Express prototype is 1.8x the standard cost; the premium buys time-to-market for NPI.
  • Same SMT line for prototype and production avoids spec drift at scale-up.
  • For regulated products (medical, defense), use a mid-EU EMS even for the first prototype.

Prototype PCBA economics in 2026

Prototype PCB assembly is the 1-50 unit batch. Hardware teams use it for NPI (new product introduction), engineering verification, customer demos, and pilot trials. Speed and per-board cost both matter; documentation usually does not.

This is where JLCPCB and PCBWay dominate globally on price alone. EU prototype shops (Eurocircuits, AISLER, our prototype slot, smaller national prototype shops) compete on lead time and quality. Mid-EU EMS like us compete on continuity to scale-up.

Three EU prototype tiers

Tier Examples MOQ Lead time Strength Weakness
Quick-quote prototype Eurocircuits, AISLER, Multi-CB 1 unit 3-7 days Online quote, fast turn, EU-shore Caps at 50 pcs / 5 000 placements
Mid-EU EMS prototype slot Energetika-VDS, smaller national EMS 1 unit 5-10 days Scale-up continuity, Class 3 capability Quotes manual (1-day turnaround)
Premium EU prototype Cicor, Schweizer 5 units 5-15 days Aerospace/medical/defense credibility Premium pricing, longer sales cycle

When to pick each tier

Pick Eurocircuits / AISLER when:

  • You need a quote in 60 seconds without emailing a human
  • The job is genuinely small (under 50 boards, simple BOM)
  • You will likely move to a different EMS for production anyway
  • The product is not regulated

Pick a mid-EU EMS (us) when:

  • The prototype will scale to 500+ units within 6 months
  • You want the same SMT line for prototype and production (no spec drift)
  • You need IPC-A-610 Class 3 even at prototype
  • The BOM has obsolete or hard-to-source parts and you want the EMS to handle sourcing

Pick a premium EU EMS when:

  • The product is medical Class IIb/III, defense, or aerospace
  • AS9100 / ISO 13485 documentation is needed from prototype 1
  • Cost is secondary to credibility

Speed: what 3-day turnaround really costs

Express prototype (3-day turnaround) typically runs at 1.5-1.8x the standard rate.

Worked example — 10 boards, 200-component board, standard vs express:

Item Standard 10-day Express 3-day
Setup €200 €200
Placement €400 €540 (+35%)
AOI €25 €25
Shipping €40 (standard EU) €120 (DHL 24h)
Total €665 €885
Per board €66.50 €88.50
Premium +33%

If the express turn lets you hit a customer demo two weeks earlier, the +€220 is a rounding error. If you're just being impatient, save it.

Scale-up continuity

The under-appreciated cost of prototype-with-different-EMS-than-production: spec drift.

Prototype Shop A uses a slightly different reflow profile from Production Shop B. Same nominal SAC305 solder, but A peaks at 245°C and B peaks at 242°C. Your prototype works. Your production lot has 3% intermittent fails on a temperature-sensitive part that worked fine in prototype.

Diagnosing this takes 4-8 weeks. Cost: 6-figure delay on a product launch.

Solution: same SMT line for prototype and production. Our DDM Novastar reflow runs the same profile in both. If you launch with us on prototype 1, prototype 10, pilot 100, production 5 000 — same line, same profile, no spec drift.

NPI documentation we keep even on prototype

Even at qty 1, we capture:

  • Reflow profile snapshot (stored, retrievable for scale-up)
  • AOI photo of every board
  • Component lot codes for traceability
  • Setup parameters (stencil aperture, paste-to-pad ratio, feeder rotation)

When you scale up, we reload the same parameters. No "let's calibrate again". Saves you 1-2 days of pilot calibration on the 500-unit production run.

RFQ for prototype PCBA

For a fast turn:

  1. Gerbers (ZIP)
  2. BOM with MPN (CSV or XLSX)
  3. CPL (CSV)
  4. Quantity (1-50)
  5. Lead-time preference (standard / fast / express)
  6. Component sourcing model (turnkey / consigned)
  7. Specify if Class 3 inspection required

Send via RFQ form. One-business-day quote for prototype slots.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest prototype PCB assembly in Europe? Eurocircuits and AISLER tend to win on price for genuinely small jobs (under 10 boards). Mid-EU EMS catches up at 20-50 boards.

How fast can I get a prototype PCB assembled in Europe? 3 working days express, 5-7 standard. Add 1-2 days shipping inside the EU.

Can I get 1 prototype board made? Yes, at Eurocircuits, AISLER, and most mid-EU EMS prototype slots. MOQ = 1 unit is standard.

Should I prototype with the same EMS that will do production? Yes if you can. Same line = no spec drift at scale-up.

Is prototype PCBA cheaper from JLCPCB? Per-board, yes. Once you include 7-10 day air freight, customs broker, VAT, and the time cost of waiting, EU prototype is competitive on most jobs under 20 boards.
